Job Description
PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Level Ill Research/Quality Improvement Clinical Pharmacist oversees all operations of investigational drug services ("Research Pharmacy") at Kings County Medical Center and establishes and oversees medication-use evaluations, medication quality improvement, and research activities.
As the Level Ill Research/Quality Improvement Clinical Pharmacist, your role in coordinating and providing expertise in support of clinical investigational drug trials is integral to the success of our research endeavors.
• Provide clinical resources and infrastructure to build and sustain clinical trial research at KCHC.
• Act as a liaison between the pharmacy, nursing, and medical staff to educate on current drug-related procedures, policies, and guidelines, and to ensure effective communication and collaboration.
• To participate in quality assurance programs to enhance the safety and efficacy of medication use.
• To lead the strategic planning and implementation of a Medication Utilization Program, including medication quality improvement and medication-related research activities.
• Coordinate medication-use evaluations, quality improvement, and medication-related research activities, including the evidence-based review of medicine use, review of medication expenditure, and the implementation and evaluation of interventions to change practice in collaboration with medical, pharmacy, and nursing staff across all hospital service lines.
• To develop and deliver training and educational activities associated with medication utilization review, quality improvement, and research activities to medical, nursing, and pharmacy staff.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
• Liaises with principal investigators and/or trial coordinators/research assistants to establish the pharmacy's role, determine fee schedules, and implement dispensing, compounding, and billing procedures.
• Participation in initiation visits, audits, and closeouts
• Maintains a pharmacy binder that contains a study summary, protocol, dispensing procedures, completed samples of required paperwork, dispensing checklist, fee schedule, billing procedures, and any other relevant materials for each investigational trial.
• Communicates with and trains staff anticipated to participate in any aspect of the clinical investigational drug trial.
• Maintains responsibility for managing the inventory for clinical investigational drug trials; orders, replaces, and returns study materials, as required.
• Provides drug information to physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals regarding clinical investigational trial drugs.
• Monitors pharmacy activities daily to ensure adherence to study protocols and dispensing procedures.
• Involved in attaining compliance with regulatory standards regarding medication-related measures.
• Implement the Medication Utilization Program focusing on high-cost, high-usage usage, and high-risk medications to ensure cost-effective, evidence-based medication use is implemented to optimize patient outcomes and contribute to the institution's overall quality of care.
• Participate in and sometimes lead drug-related research.
• Participate in the professional development and competency of clinical pharmacy staff.
• Function as an educational resource for pharmacy staff.
• Participate in the preparation and review of policies and procedures.
• Documents interventions, adverse drug reactions (ADRs), and medication errors
• Optimize cost savings and avoidance via formulary adherence and best practice clinical guidelines.
• Participate in developing medication management programs within the institution, including clinical guidelines, critical pathways, disease management, and drug use programs.
• Initiate and lead departmental quality PI projects.
• Develop and conduct target drug programs and medication use evaluations as needed and report results to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As the Level Ill Research/Quality Improvement Clinical Pharmacist, you will play a crucial role in maintaining practice standards by JCAHO, FDA, and other regulatory requirements, ensuring our operations are always in compliance.
• Collects and documents workload measurement statistics; provides other data, as required.
• Support of quality improvement projects and research initiatives
• Involved in quality improvement activities and PDSA models
• Participates in collecting Key Performance Indicators for the department
• Performance of medication use reviews to assess cost-effectiveness and medication appropriateness.
• Participate in developing medication management programs within the institution, including clinical guidelines, critical pathways, disease management, and drug use programs.
• Maintains responsibility for both the clinical and the distributive activities of the Pharmacy Department as necessary
• Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
For Level I:
1. Possession of a valid NY State license to practice pharmacy.
For Level II: In addition to meeting the qualification requirements of the lower level:
1. Two years of post licensure experience; or
2. Completion of a post graduate specialty residency or fellowship program; or
3. Current Pharmacy Board Certification.
For Level III: In addition to meeting the qualification requirements of the lower levels, an additional:
1. One year of post licensure supervisory experience or specialty clinical experience.
