PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Laboratory & Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for laboratory and animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of husbandry, veterinary, state-of-the-art technology, and pre-clinical scientific services. This Research Associate III position is expected to investigate ways of standardizing the growth of normal (non-cancerous) human organoids, to utilize organoids to model and study human disease, and to perform and publish independent research.
KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
• Maintain human cell lines in culture and perform cell reprogramming to iPSCs and subsequent differentiation to organoids under the guidance of scientific staff.
• Perform molecular biology procedures such as nucleic acid extraction and purification, PCR, ELISA, Western blots, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining.
• Perform microscopy imaging and analysis.
• Implement and troubleshoot new protocols. Modify and update protocols as needed.
• Execute experiments independently with guidance from program scientists.
• Help set up and maintain laboratory databases.
• Maintain proper quality control checks for experiments, assays, and equipment. General laboratory upkeep and supply.
• Schedule and oversee equipment maintenance and repairs.
• Maintain property database and serve as a property officer for the laboratory.
• Compile, analyze, and report scientific data to program scientists.
• Keep accurate and detailed records and documents laboratory operations and data collection.
• Computer/data management, including maintenance of complex Excel spreadsheets, GraphPad Prism and PowerPoint, and additional scientific analysis programs.
• Perform assignments independently and follow all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Work involves the use of potentially hazardous material or may be located in areas where such materials are used.
• Work may require the use of personal protective equipment and requires adherence to strict safety protocols.
• Schedule may include occasional weekend and holiday hours.
• Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience and may direct the work of other staff members.
• Other duties as assigned.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
• Possession of Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or four (4) years relevant experience in lieu of degree. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
• In addition to the education requirement, must have at least 8 years of direct experience in organoid or stem cell biology.
• Must possess basic Microsoft Office skills.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
