Job Description

for examination, preparing and dispensing medications as directed by the provider.

As a research assistant, you will work closely with a principal investigator while also having the opportunity to collaborate with fellow research assistants. Your responsibilities will include maintaining extensive clinical-outcome databases, assisting in the creation of academic posters for presentations at national orthopedic conferences, and contributing to research projects intended for publication in leading orthopedic journals.

Through hands-on work and reviewing operative notes for data entry, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of anatomy within your assigned specialty as well as the specific surgical techniques performed by the provider.

Primary Job Duties

Medical Assistant Role
• Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, and height.
• Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician.
• Record patients' medical history, vital statistics, or information such as test results in medical records.
• Prepare medications as directed by a physician.
• Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing.
• Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, or physicians' instructions to patients.
• Help physicians examine and treat patients, handing them instruments or materials or performing such tasks as drawing up injections or removing sutures.
• Authorize drug refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies.
• Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean, restocking supplies in the rooms.
• Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
• Triage clinical calls from patients and redirect, advise, collect information as needed and appropriate under the providers protocol and supervision.
• Schedule appointments for patients.
• Change dressings on wounds.
• Suture removal as directed by a physician.
• Cast application and removal as directed by a physician.
• Fit Durable Medical Equipment (DME) as directed by a physician.
• Greet and log in patients arriving in the office or clinic.
• Contact medical facilities or department.
• Perform general office duties, such as answering telephones, triaging patient concerns, taking dictation, or completing insurance forms.
• Inventory and order medical, lab, or office supplies or equipment.
• Operate ultrasound, or other equipment to assist providers while they administer injections or diagnostic tests.
• Perform any additional duties assigned by your manager or supervisor.
Research Assistant Role
• Maintain research data, patient files, regulatory binders, and study databases. Our providers have 7 prospectively-maintained registries for various surgery types.
• Basic Data Analysis. The incumbent will be expected to have advanced proficiency organizing and analyzing large data sets.
• Project Coordination. The incumbent will be in charge of multiple projects at once.
• Keep track of prospective studies, coordinate with multiple institutions in a multicenter study, and facilitate retrospective chart review studies in various stages.
• Developing and structuring study protocols. The incumbent will work closely with a Primary Investigator (PI) to create study designs and protocols for submission to NEBH's Institutional Review Board.
• Independently perform literature reviews to accurately and efficiently structure a new study.
• Manuscript and presentation creation. The RA will work with the PI to draft entire manuscripts for submission and presentation to the top national and international orthopedic journals and conferences.
• Act as a study resource for subjects and their families. The incumbent works in conjunction with the PI and other co-investigators to ensure that all subject questions, concerns, and other matters are addressed both efficiently and accurately.
• Orienting and supervising new study staff members. Our research routinely has medical students, residents, and fellows working with us as co-investigators. Our incumbent is one of two people who orient and supervise these staff.
• The qualified candidate should have a strong academic record, be self-driven, motivated to learn, and able to work with limited supervision.
• The qualified candidate should have advanced proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and be familiar with basic statistical methods.
• This person will have demonstrated problem solving acumen.

Education and Experience

0-1 years of experience

Bachelor's Degree

Preferably those with aspirations for healthcare/MD/PA/NP track.
