Candidates must have an MD or DO degree (or equivalent), hold a Louisiana medical license prior to start date, and the following:
• Dual boarded/eligible (or equivalent) in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine AND Pediatric Cardiology; OR Board certified/eligible (or equivalent) in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine with significant cardiac critical care experience; OR board certified/eligible (or equivalent) in Pediatric Cardiology with formal advanced training in Cardiac Intensive Care Medicine (minimum of 12 months)
This is a full-time faculty position at the Assistant, Associate Professor, or Professor level (non-tenure, clinical track) with academic rank to be determined by the candidate’s credentials and experience. The faculty member will serve as attending physician responsible for the care of critically ill pediatric and adult congenital cardiac medical and surgical patients care while working collaboratively with other faculty in pediatric cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, CICU-based advanced practice providers, and other specialists in the management of cardiac patients in the cardiac ICU as well as other locations within the health system. Clinical service time will be commensurate with the needs of the Division and intensive care unit and includes in-house night coverage. The position also entails a commitment to the teaching of physician trainees at all levels (including medical students), advanced practice providers, nurses, and other unit-based staff. Faculty members are also expected to participate in various university and hospital-driven training and educational activities, including quality improvement and care process improvement initiatives, and are strongly encouraged to pursue basic science or clinical research interests, which will require separate efforts to obtain outside grant funding wherever possible.
Currently, approximately 200 heart catheterizations (75% interventional) and close to 250 cardiothoracic surgeries are performed each year at Manning Family Children’s, a 247-bed tertiary care teaching complex located in the heart of New Orleans which serves the entire State of Louisiana and the central Gulf Coast region. In late 2021, Manning Family Children’s completed a $300 million renovation, which included the creation of a state-of-the-art 28 bed CICU/Cardiac Care Unit along with expansion of the cardiac catheterization laboratories, operating rooms, pre-surgical examination rooms, PACU, surgical family facilities, and other beautiful infrastructure facilities. The CICU is staffed 24/7 with 5 cardiac intensivists and we are actively recruiting 3 more intensivists. The Heart Center participates in STS, PC4, Impact, NPC-QIC, ACTION, and other major registries.
The Heart Center has an ACGME-accredited LSUHSC pediatric cardiology fellowship training program. There are excellent opportunities for clinical, translational and basic research, particularly with the LSUHSC Cardiovascular Center of Excellence as well as the Heart Center’s Research Core. The successful candidate is expected to have strong clinical skills, have an interest in research, and participate actively in the teaching of residents and fellows.
