Responsibilities
Examines and performs testing on blood, body fluids, tissue and other specimens to aid in diagnosis; operates complex instruments to test biological specimens; evaluates and solves problems related to the collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis; follows standard procedures related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis; follows standard procedures to perform routine, timed and STAT moderate and complex laboratory tests and recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems maintaining written or computer documentation; maintains instruments by performing maintenance procedures and calibration; reports all critical values following laboratory protocol; operates and utilizes necessary programs on the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS) utilizing a PC; analyzes quality control data, evaluates the results and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy; draws blood specimens from patients; monitors the work pending log of designated sections and documents action taken; maintains a neat and efficient work area by cleaning bench tops, equipment/instruments and replenishes supplies in a timely manner; works as a generalist to include Blood Bank, Core Lab, and Microbiology; communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families and healthcare team in person and via telephone; responds to overhead pages; maintains accurate and complete records by recognizing abnormal and/or critical values, takes action following established protocols and/or refers to supervisor; documents customer complaints, testing and reporting errors and presents each to supervisor for corrective actions; adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards; abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization’s values; adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality; safely performs functions which require minimal supervision; utilizes proper body mechanics when moving, positioning and transferring patients or when moving equipment/supplies with or without assistance; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime and call as required; related duties as required.
Employees must be in a regular position, working 20 hours or more per week (.50 FTE or greater) to qualify for benefits.

Qualifications
Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama -OR- Completion of a medical laboratory technician clinical training program -and- Registry eligible with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
